How to Understand Depression

As humans, we all develop some form of sadness or grief that can come from deep within. Sometimes this isn’t depression but just some emotional breakthrough from going through the motions. However, when it becomes a bit excessive and you start to dwell on things, that might be depression. It’s important to have someone diagnose those signs so in case of an emergency, you know who to call to help fix the issue. You never want to be alone when some anxiety or something comes around and can make things turn for the worst. Here are a few tips to help you understand depression.

What is Depression?

The first question you should ask yourself is “what’s depression?”  It’s important to find this out so you’ll be able to deal with situations a bit better. A basic definition of depression is a feeling of sadness or hopelessness/worthlessness and not enjoying things you used to like. Of course, every person suffer from depression every now and again. That’s normal because we’re humans and go through our own problems. However, if you notice that’s a frequent occurrence to the point where it interferes with your daily life, that’s when you need to start making calls to get help. This is more of a clinical depression kind of phase. Sometimes, these symptoms can last a full day to the point where you don’t want to get up let alone work.

Are There Different Depression Names Diagnosed?

Yes. There are different kinds of depression that a doctor can diagnose. We’ll briefly run through some of these as follows. One, Major Depressive Disorder. This is more along a severe depression disorder that makes you feel incapacitated to people or not be able to work or function. There are more feelings of guilt, hopelessness, and even suicidal thoughts. Another depression type is called Dysthymic disorder – it’s more chronic because it lasts two years or longer. Women that just gave birth have Post Partum Depression. Additionally, some maybe affected by the season changes (particularly during the winter season), and they have Seasonal Affective Disorder. There are other forms of depression, but the ones just mentioned become more common in people.

When it comes to depression, everyone can be a bit different in how they express their emotion. Some may be harder to read, and others you can see wear their heart on the sleeve. One of the most common symptoms include a feeling of sadnessor hopeless. There is a severe distate for things that used to be interesting like trying different foods or even becoming intimate in a relationship. Sometimes, the appetite may change all together and you’ll stress eat all the time or lose your appetite to the point where you drop tons of weight. Some also exhibit more extreme symptoms like not being able to fall asleep or staying asleep. People can also be more irritable or angry even when it’s misplaced toward the wrong person. Everyone is different but a combination of a few of these symptoms can be enough to diagnose depression.
