Managing Diabetes in Older Adults
Living with Diabetes can be tough and especially for the elderly. However, this is not to mean that one cannot live happily with the condition. By living smart and healthy, one can take full control of the condition and not have to worry every time about being a Diabetic. A couple of simple lifestyle changes will automatically do the trick. Some basic routines such as regularly checking your glucose levels and daily exercise routines will help a lot in getting your diabetes under control. The latter might prove to be difficult for older adults but simple exercise routines such as daily walks or jogs play a major role in helping you live a healthy life.
Making healthy choices in as far as food is concerned is the most important change of them all. Being a diabetic, it is important that one maintains a diet that will tamper with their already fragile glucose levels. It is advisable to concentrate more of foodstuffs with very low levels of sugar as well as fat. It is only through healthy eating habits that one can improve their blood sugar levels. Some doctors actually help patients come up with a meal plan. This plan acts as a guide to what one can eat and what one should avoid.
For one, avoid brown rise at all costs. Go for items such as whole grain breads, cereals and pasta. Whole grains give you the right amount and kind of fats. In addition to this, one should take a whole lot of low calorie fruits and vegetables. Some very good examples of such food elements include broccoli, spinach, carrots, apples, pears, red peppers, citrus fruits and berries. Artificial sugars should also be avoided at all costs. Items such as soda or processed juice should be completely removed from your diet. The kinds of sugars they contain simply add to the amount of glucose already in your body. Instead of taking soda, a cool glass of water would do you better. A good mix of fiber, proteins, minerals and vitamins will do the trick.
Apart from the types of food one should eat, some changes also have to be made on the quantity of food taken. It is advisable that elderly diabetics take smaller amounts of food for each meal. This is does not mean you go about starving yourself. Simply reduce the size of food you consume per meal. For those who frequent restaurants and food joints, it is not a must that you clear every piece of food on your plate. If you find it to be in excess, do not force yourself to eating it. You can as well form a habit of packing the left-overs for later.
